History Behind The Design

Originating out of dire need and desperation during World War I. Dazzle Camouflage (Razzle Dazzle in The U.S.A.) was a solution to deadly problem. German Submarines (U-boat) were extremely effective in torpedo attacks on British ships. The Germans were sinking almost 8 ships a day. The British Naval efforts were facing anniliation.

Norman Wilkinson, professional Illustrator, while serving in Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve was assigned to solve this harrowing problem. After days of intense research and investigation, Norman was at his wits end. The thought, "It was all but impossible to hide a ship on the ocean" was his moment of EUREKA when he came to the idea "How can a ship be made more difficult to aim at from a distance through a periscope?" At that moment he decided not to design for concealment, but for distortion of form.

After initial hypothesis, testing and conclusion. Norman Wilkinson's plan was adopted by the British Admiralty and he was also placed in charge of a naval camouflage unit.
